For us at Carrve Custom Vans, choosing to work with aluminum cabinets comes down to three things: function, durability, and design.
In a van that’s constantly moving, exposed to temperature swings, and loaded with gear, materials matter. Here’s why aluminum is our material of choice for van conversions— and why we custom-designed our kitchen galley the way we did.
Built for Movement: Why Aluminum Outperforms Wood in Van Conversions
Vans aren’t static. Your rig is constantly vibrating, shifting, heating up, cooling down, and absorbing impact from the road.
Unlike traditional wood cabinetry, aluminum:
- Won’t warp from moisture or humidity
- Won’t swell or shrink with temperature changes
- Maintains structural integrity over time
- Handles vibration with less loosening and shifting
Aluminum is lightweight, strong, and stable. It keeps weight down without sacrificing structure, which is a major advantage in a custom van build.
For gear-heavy and adventure-focused rigs, this durability makes a real difference over time.
Why Our Kitchen Galley Is 16” Deep
Most van kitchen cabinets on the market are deeper. That might sound like a good thing — until you try loading bikes, skis, boards, or large gear into your van.
That’s why our custom kitchen/workspace in the GFR is designed at just 16 inches deep.
We intentionally made it narrower to:
- Maximize open floor space
- Prioritize room for bikes and gear
- Maintain a spacious interior feel
- Preserve functionality for cooking and gear organization
You still get versatile counter space and essential storage — but without crowding the layout.
The result? A van that feels open and functional, even when fully loaded.

Designed Around Your Gear — Not Against It
Many van layouts prioritize a residential kitchen feel. We design around real-world use.
Our cabinets are shaped and sized for the lifestyle:
- Load up your gear without blocking walkways
- Move comfortably inside the van
- Gear up indoors when conditions aren’t ideal
- Store essentials without sacrificing openness
Every dimension is intentional. The layout works around your equipment instead of forcing your equipment to work around the layout.
Designed by riders. Built to fit your lifestyle.
Clean, Modern Construction
Performance is only part of the equation — aesthetics matter too.
Our aluminum cabinets feature:
- Hidden fasteners
- Clean lines
- Seamless finishes
- A modern, minimal look
We take the extra step in the design and fabrication process to eliminate exposed hardware and visual clutter. The result is cabinetry that looks refined and purpose-built — not pieced together.

Easy to Maintain on the Road
Life on the road gets messy. Muddy boots, dusty trails, wet gear — it all adds up.
Aluminum cabinets are easy to maintain. A quick wipe-down keeps surfaces looking fresh without worrying about staining, moisture damage, or material degradation.
For long-term van ownership, low-maintenance materials reduce headaches and extend the life of your build.
Designed With Purpose, Built for our Custom Rigs
Our cabinetry isn’t just about aesthetics — it’s designed around the needs of our custom rigs. Every dimension and every feature is planned to integrate seamlessly with your gear and our water, electrical, and storage systems.
Because our cabinets are fully engineered for our builds, they aren’t sold separately. The layout, size, and structure are specific to the GFR and optimized for function, durability, and workflow.
Everything is built to maximize space, keep your gear organized, and make living in a van as functional and comfortable as possible.
