Behind the Build: Why we use Coin Grip Flooring in our Custom Van Conversions

When choosing flooring for a van build, durability matters just as much as aesthetics. For many builders, coin grip flooring for van conversions is one of the most practical options because it handles moisture, dirt, vibration, and daily wear.

That’s why we use coin grip flooring in our custom van builds.

What Is Coin Grip Flooring?

Coin grip flooring is a heavy-duty rubber material designed for high-traffic, high-impact environments. It features a raised coin texture that provides traction while maintaining a clean, finished look.

Unlike snap-together vinyl planks or laminate flooring, coin grip comes in large sheets, creating a more sealed and durable surface — ideal for van life.

Why Coin Grip Is Ideal for Van Conversions

1. Sealed and Durable

Van life is tough on materials. Dirt, sand, rocks, water, and gear all get dragged inside daily.

Coin grip flooring is made from industrial-grade rubber designed to withstand:

  • Constant foot traffic
  • Vibration from driving
  • Moisture and humidity
  • Heavy gear and equipment

Because it installs in large sheets, it creates a more seamless and waterproof barrier compared to interlocking planks.

2. Non-Slip Surface for Safety

The raised coin pattern isn’t just for looks. It provides grip and traction, helping prevent slips — especially when the floor is wet.

It also helps reduce gear movement while driving, which is important in gear-focused rigs.

3. Waterproof and Weather Resistant

Vans experience major temperature swings and moisture exposure.

High-quality coin rubber flooring resists:

  • Heat
  • Cold
  • UV exposure
  • Water
  • Oils and most common chemicals

Unlike wood-based flooring options, it won’t swell, warp, or separate over time.

4. Easy to Clean and Maintain

One of the biggest benefits of coin grip flooring is how simple it is to maintain. We typically use a leaf blower to blow out the bigger pieces, and then wipe it down with a regular household cleaner.

For gear-heavy builds, this makes a huge difference over the lifespan of your van.

5. Works Beyond Just the Floor

We use coin grip not only on the van floor, but also on lower wall panels where extra durability is needed and there’s a lot of contact with your wet, dirty, or muddy gear.

Anywhere you expect impact and heavy use, coin grip performs well.

Adhesive Matters

One of the most overlooked parts of installing coin grip flooring is the adhesive.

Using the wrong adhesive can lead to:

  • Bubbling
  • Peeling
  • Poor bonding
  • Premature failure

We recommend sourcing your flooring from suppliers who provide an adhesive specifically designed to work with the material, such as RecPro or Lonseal. Matching the adhesive to the flooring ensures a clean, long-lasting installation.

Another important tip for installation: When applying the adhesive and flooring, make sure you follow the instructions provided from the supplier as closely as possible. In the application, things like temperature have a big impact on the bonding.

Coin Grip vs. Snap-Together Van Flooring

Many van builders consider luxury vinyl planks (LVP) or snap-together flooring because it looks residential and familiar.

However, those materials often:

  • Separate over time with vibration
  • Allow moisture between seams
  • Are less impact-resistant
  • Require more precise subfloor conditions
  • Are designed for temperature-controlled environments

For gear-focused rigs that prioritize durability and function, coin grip flooring is often the more practical choice.
